Hello! This is Fiona Leung from Hong Kong Branch.

Due to stringent trading control for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and decreasing demand for second-hand products in markets outside Hong Kong, it is not sustainable to rely on the export of WEEE.

Hence, The Computer & Communication Products Recycling Programme (CCRP) has been launched in January 2008 to provide some methods for the public to manage their used computer equipment in an environmentally manner.

The CCRP refurbishes used computer equipment that are still in working condition and then donate to the needy. Also, it appoints a commercial recycler to dismantle the remaining used computers and recover useful parts and materials.

To cater for the CCPR, Environmental Protection Department (EPD) introduces different outlets such as participating estates and buildings, designated public collection points and bulk pick up to collect used computers and computer accessories to enhance the public awareness in the recycling of computers and communication products.

On top of that, about 70,000 tonnes of WEEE are generated in Hong Kong annually. Owing to landfill overflow, Hong Kong has no room for delay. All of us are responsible for this issue. SMTB as a member incorporates in Honk Kong also put much emphasis on this problem.

SMTB has been launching flexible seating to improve the working environment. For higher flexibility, Management suggested colleagues to change to wireless keyboards. Therefore, we accumulated lots of keyboards and mouses. We make good use of this golden opportunity to brought keyboards and mouses (100 in total) to the collection point under EPD in Kennedy Town for donation. All of them are still in good quality.

Although we donated only keyboards and mouses, small step get us started. Throughout this donation, our colleagues will raise awareness of waste reduction. Recycle not only waste paper, metals, plastics and glass, but also electrical equipments and appliances.
