Hello! This is Tommy Chu from Hong Kong Branch, a member of Well-being team of Social Value and Well-being Committee (SVWC) in FY2023.
Zentangle Method is a simple, relaxing, and enjoyable way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. By creating tangles with combinations of dots, lines and S-curves, random but structured patterns would be formed and finally turned into a masterpiece of art. It is non-representational and unplanned so we can focus on each stroke and not worry about the result. We just need to know the steps and the result will be a delightful surprise.
The method is an elegant metaphor and model for inspiring a deliberate artistry in life. For this reason, no eraser is included as Zentangle tools and the unplanned pen marks are inspirations to go in directions that we may not have otherwise explored. It encourages self-respect and respect for our creativity by avoiding common blocks to creative flow such as: self-criticism, fear of failure and worrying about outcomes.
In December 2023, SMTB Hong Kong Branch participated a “Zentangle Stress Reduction Workshop” organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Council. Its objectives are to create a joyful and healthy working environment.
As a result, we invited not only staffs from Branch but also the subsidiary side to share this fruitful memory after a week of hard work.
During the workshop, the lecturer taught some skills such as the “CISO” patterns and shared some real-life examples to deconstruct figures. The key to Zentangle was to draw it in a slow pace and let our mind to lead us. As no expectations were given by initial drawing, all our drawings were purely created by our soul.
It turned out every one’s drawing was wonderful, and it was able to show our own creativity. I truly believed we were able to relieve ourselves during the process and to enjoy the moment in pursuit of happiness.
Let’s keep a joyful vibe at work and maintain a creative and healthy working environment!
