Hello! This is Rio from Sumitomo Mitsui Trust (Hong Kong) Limited (SMTHK).

The world produces enough food to feed everyone, yet almost 1 billion people are still chronically undernourished. One of the problems is that roughly 1/3 of the food produced every year is lost or wasted, that’s enough to feed 3 billion people. If 25% of that globally was saved, it would be enough to feed 870 million people around the world.

Along with poverty, conflict and a lack of resources, food waste is one of the root causes of hunger globally, and hunger – in all its forms – is the number one risk to human health worldwide.

This is a problem that the whole world needs to address, and for SMTHK members, the place to start is right here, in our own districts and neighborhoods.

SMTHK is proud to have supported Feeding Hong Kong, a Hong Kong registered charity collects surplus food from companies and redistributes it to local charities and educate the community about better managing food in encouraging our employees to give back to the community by group volunteering in the bread run event on 15 August 2023.

With the eagerness to volunteer to the community, 46 employees and family members have signed up for the event which is the highest number of participants involved since SDGs Project Team was set up in SMTHK.  Nearly 1,000 pieces of bread were rescued from 52 stores around Hong Kong that night.

The bread was delivered to 7 charities next morning.  They are:

  1. Food for Good
  2. Food Grace
  3. Gracious Shepherd Christian Church
  4. New Home Association
  5. Operation Dawn
  6. People Service Centre
  7. Youth With A Mission Hong Kong

After participating in the bread run and Food Bank Tour, we would know more about the work of Feeding Hong Kong, what we would do to reduce food waste and improve the lives of the underprivileged by bridging the gap between hunger and food waste and share them with our friends and family.
